Sir, - Time magazine (July 5th) refers to Atlanta: "At the Olympic track and field trials in June (1996) the mercury rose to a muggy 38 C (100.4 F) in the stands and 44.5 C (112.1 F) on the track itself." Earlier it states that the weather in Atlanta". . . tends toward the brutal in July and August."
If this happens at the Olympic Games it is of fair, it may even be dangerous, for track and field athletics. - Yours, etc.,

Dalkey, Co Dublin.
