Madam, - So the last 10 mature London plane trees on our capital's O'Connell Street are to be felled (The Irish Times, August 31st). This despite a commitment to the contrary given nearly two years ago to Dublin City Council's central area committee.

Does a protracted lobby campaign, highlighted by the national media, by conservationists and the public count for nothing? Local election results in June reflected citizens' perception that their voices were not being heard and an atmosphere of arrogance prevailed.

The removal of the remaining trees on O'Connell Street will diminish the acknowledged improvements carried out in Phase 1 of Dublin City Council's plan. There is a growing trend of "development at all costs". These trees cannot be replaced: they are part of our heritage. Ask the birds. - Yours, etc.,

TERRY McNULTY, Ross Hill, Wicklow Town.
