Sir, - If Father McCaffery really has a desire to tackle religious bigotry (November 30th), he ought to tackle the anti-Protestant confessions of his own church. The Council of Trent positively curses any who believe the distinctive doctrines of the Protestant faith. Whatever else may be claimed for Vatican II, it professes to "follow on in the footsteps of the Council of Trent" and "further the work begun" by that infamous council.
Let him publicly deny that any man - be he Protestant born or converted to its teachings - is not accursed if he believes that in the Last Supper, Christ did not institute the Apostles priests or did not ordain that they and other priests should offer His own body and blood (Canons on the Sacrifice of the Mass).
I think we will be a long time waiting. - Yours, etc.,
Colin Maxwell, Briarscourt, Shanakiel, Cork.
