Sir, We can be thankful that the Northern Ireland Assembly so strongly advocated by John Major (January 24th) will never see the light of day. How few members could we hope to get away with? For a constituency of 1 1/2 million, 100 at the least. They will have no powers their remit will only be to agree.
If you really wanted agreement, would you put 100 people together? No, you would use as few as possible on each side. You would set them to talk privately, even in secret you wouldn't set up an assembly which is bound to degenerate into a public brawl and a media circus. - Yours, etc.,
