Sir, - Louie O'Mahony raised the question of the proliferation of junk mail around North County Dublin, I have previously raised the subject in another daily paper, but it attracted no support from the public.
Basically the whole concept of junk mail is illegal, entry to private property without the permission of the owner is trespass and the abuse of the property by placing scraps of paper through letter boxes is an abuse of personal property rights. People generally are very submissive to various abuses of property rights, particularly trespass.
Our Government brought in legislation recently on that matter, after pressure from the powerful farming lobby. However ii was an innocuous piece of legal window dressing, and did not refer at all to city dwellers.
My advice to people objecting to junk mail, is: place a notice on the door saying NO JUNK MAIL. Also block the letter box, but do not forget to remove it before the postman comes,
Yours, etc.,
