Madam, – As Monday was the last day of the primary school summer holiday and such a beautiful day I decided to walk the East Pier in Dún Laoghaire with my two children, aged six and four.
It was a lovely walk – we admired the newly-restored bandstand and enjoyed a cup of tea at the lighthouse at the end of the pier. We then decided to walk back on the other side of pier as we wanted to be closer to the sea.
What a mistake that was. My daughters and I encountered the following: empty beer and soft- drink cans, bottles, fishing line, plastic bags, men’s underwear (my youngest daughter spotted that), take-away food containers, broken glass and unmentionable rubber items. It was my children’s reaction that was so interesting – they said that it was a total disgrace.
Later, we visited Blackrock Park, only to see that exact same type of litter lying on the grass.
Come on, people – Dún Laoghaire and Rathdown County Council can only do so much. It’s very easy to blame it for not picking up the litter, but frankly, no one should be leaving litter behind them. It is disrespectful to such a lovely part of Dublin and sets a very bad example to children. Let’s be proud of our city and treat it as it should be treated. – Yours, etc,
