Sir, - Please permit me to refer to the comment by Richard O'Brien (June 28th) directed to Mr Edobor of the Nigerian Embassy. I must say that I'm deeply appalled by his ill-informed and naive views.
I and many other people who know Nigeria well and are connected to her either by nationality, trade or residency would like to know what qualifies Mr O'Brien to make such credulous inferences about Nigeria's use of her statute book. As a Nigerian, I find Richard O'Brien's assertion of improper use of the statute book in Nigeria very insulting.
I would not claim to be an expert in international politics; neither would I be foolish to make a similarly bold but naive statement about any government's use of her statute book. There is no perfect society or government on earth. Nigeria is developing and she should be allowed to evolve her own system that will ensure her security and unity. Mr Richard O'Brien's assertion can only misrepresent the situation in a way that could affect other Irish wishing to do business in that country. In any case, I am glad that there are many Irish people who know and understand Nigeria better and will continue to relate to her and her citizens positively. - Yours, etc., N. E. NWOSU,
