Sir, - I am truly amazed by the reaction the recent No vote in the Nice referendum has provoked. What amazes me is the view expressed by many that because Ireland voted against this treaty, the electorate was misinformed, confused, ignorant of the proposal; that it doesn't count because the turnout was small and that the Government was lax in promoting the treaty. Does it not occur to these people that the electorate voted against Nice because they just did not agree with it? And why do they assume that just because the turnout was low that the result would have been any different had it been greater?
Come on, respect the people and the people's votes and respect democracy. To ignore that is the first step on the road to a dictatorship. - Yours, etc.,
Brian Hales, Park Lane, Hornchurch, Essex.
