Sir, - Both the title and content of the article "Echoes of elders as young discuss North" (February 24th) failed to mention the most important aspect of our very historic and constructive conference; namely, the major successes that were achieved on a wide range of issues by the various workgroups.
The fact that this was an inaugural meeting of "a melange of most of the main political parties..." received no mention. The occasion was unique for all present. It was the first time youth wings of political parties had gathered to discuss issues relating to Northern Ireland, and represented an opportunity for young people to transcend the obstacles towards peace.
It is of major significance that many areas of common ground were readily identified and agreed for positive action in such a short period of time. This is in marked contrast to fora of "elders" which cannot agree on such basic matters as what to talk about, or indeed how they might start to talk in the first instance.
This was no such talking shop, but rather one which will make our respected and respective "elders" sit up and take notice of a new dynamic that has come to the fore. This is something which they dare not ignore, or regard with the condescension implied by your article's statement that "the views of the established senior party politicians were reflected by the youth wings". This youth peace forum has created new life, as opposed to mirroring the old, tired political rhetoric. - Yours, etc.,
