Madam, - Prof G.L. Huxley (September 15th) laments the lack of a coherent plan to develop goods traffic on the railway network. He may be interested to know that in 1997, when oil was about $20 a barrel, the Belview Terminal at Waterford port received 40 to 60 trains a week, carrying containers from Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Belfast, Ballina and Longford.
This year, when oil peaked at $140 per barrel, there were three return trains to the container terminal from Ballina. An extraordinary turn of events. - Yours, etc,
STAN McILVENNY OBE, Chief Executive, Port of Waterford Company, Belview, Co Waterford.
