Sir, - Kevin Myers (An Irishman's Diary, August 26th) is entitled to imply his suppressed yearnings for a return of Dublin Castle and Viceregal Lodge heydays. He is out of order to the point of treason in rubbishing the chivalrous idealists of the 1916 Insurrection who gave their lives to rid their country of centuries of ingrained British misrule and discrimination. They charted the course of future Irish history which gave us our present people's free and prospering democracy.

Would Mr Myers prefer if symbolically - and I do not mean nominal, pragmatic Commonwealth membership - we had remained obsequiously under the Crown like Scotland and Wales? - Yours, etc., J. P. Duggan,
