Sir, - Irish citizens have yet again to endure the double-speak from our so-called political leaders regarding the latest political scandal. May I humbly attempt to articulate in plain English what the real situation is? The Government guidelines are crystal clear: "All office holders are expected to adhere to the fundamental principles that an offer of gifts, hospitality or services should not be accepted where it would, or might appear to, place him or her under an obligation."
Mary Harney and Charlie McCreevy have flagrantly disregarded these guidelines and should be censured. Their actions once again demonstrate that Irish politicians do not know the meaning of the term "ethics in office".
The Taoiseach's weak and inane response yet again confirms that the Irish people still await a national leader with the courage and vision necessary to rid us of the virus of corruption within the body politic. Fine Gael is no less guilty: Nora Owen's visit to the villa and John Bruton's helicopter trip amount to the same disregard for public accountability.
The fact that the McEvaddy generosity is multi-party seems to indicate that the business community accepts the demise of old-style Irish politics whereby the country was ruled either by Fianna Fail or Fine Gael/Labour. Apparently, the modern way to protect and strengthen democracy is to support all parties with the potential to form a coalition government.
Again, the political response to questionable behaviour is instructive. Mary Harney's approach - "did nothing wrong, no favours asked or given" - is pure Fianna Fail. She should do the decent thing, admit that the brave dream of the Progressive Democrats is dead and return to her roots. - Yours, etc.,
Anthony Sheridan, Carraig Eoin, Cobh, Co Cork.
