Sir, – A female on a mobile phone stepped in front of my wife at the Father Matthew Bridge in Dublin and knocked her off her bicycle. Apologies did not mitigate the shock or salve the gashes and bruising.
Driving recently on Tara Street, another lady, equally oblivious, walked out in front of our car. On North Frederick Street, I saw a woman push her buggy and two children in front of a bus as the road lights turned to green. On Abbey Street – despite a warning toot – I watched a man stroll blithely across an approaching tram.
Pavements are just as hazardous. Constant tacking is required to avoid texters and talkers who couldn’t care less about other pedestrians.
Should phone companies be forced to educate these mobile morons – or install a warning device for outdoor use? Or is regulation the answer, before some innocent is maimed or killed – as my wife could so easily have been by a following vehicle? – Yours, etc,
BRENDAN LYNCH,
Dublin 7.
