Mobile Offences

Sir, - It has been said that the law is an ass, and the following anomaly would seem to support this view. The driver of a car is required by law to wear a safety belt, as arethe passengers when belts are provided, even though failure to comply involves no risk to anybody but the occupants of the vehicle. On the other hand, when a driver uses a mobile phone while driving, according to qualified medical opinion, the risk of a crash is quadrupled. But this is not an offence, even though society at large is endangered.Surely it is time our legislators addressed this matter, particularly in view of the increasing use of mobile phones on the road and the horrific record of death and injury as a result of road crashes? - Yours, etc., Douglas McCowan,Templeville Road,Dublin 6W.
