Sir, – It was with great sadness and regret that I read the obituary of Tony Sweeney, eloquently penned by Brian O’Connor (“Doyen of racing journalists dies, aged 81”, Sports, December 5th). As a regular and avid reader of “Tony’s Two” I will miss his weekend naps and indeed his many equine anecdotes.
In 1923, Judge Rowlatt stated in Graham v Green that a bet is merely an irrational agreement, which requires skill and shrewdness to be profitable. Alas! This weekend many bets will be even more irrational without the shrewd and skilful guidance of the doyen of racing journalists! – Yours, etc,
