Sir, - Everybody who understands the true meaning of the new millennium must welcome the call of the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Connell, for a statue of Christ to mark the 2,000 years of Christianity.
In other countries, important but lesser events have been marked by the design and construction of large monuments to Christ. For instance, the huge statue of Christ overlooking Rio de Janeiro was erected in 1931 by the Brazilian bishops and people to mark the centennial (in 1921) of Brazil's independence from Portugal.
In Portugal, the great statue of Christ that overlooks Lisbon was designed and constructed by the Portuguese bishops and people in thanksgiving to God for saving that country from the ravages of the second World War.
God has been good to us in Ireland. Surely a fine statue of Christ the King would be a fitting way to mark the millennium and to publicly express our appreciation for the many benefits which we have received? - Yours, etc., John O'Halloran,
Bantry Road, Dublin 9.
