Sir, - Television has hijacked sport; it is about to hijack religious services also. Rev Martin Tierney et al. (October 15th) explain the move to the National Concert Hall for their millennium service: "We are informed, because of the logistics involved, that there is no possibility of television coverage, apart from a small news clip, if we use a church."
In their exuberance they also tell us: "The nature of the creative celebration we are planning, expressed in music, word and image, will best be suited to a building which allows for flexibility of expression."
What are we really celebrating? The tyranny of television, the inauguration of a secular millennium or the birth of Jesus Christ? These irreverent gentlemen should get their priorities right. - Yours, etc.,
T. O'Connor, Churchtown, Dublin 14.
