Sir, I have recently read articles on several of the 39 projects which have now been approved by the United Kingdom Millennium Commission. These projects range in cost from £50 million (Earth Centre, Doncaster, and new gallery for The Tate Gallery) down to £126,000 and included are four located in Northern Ireland excluding to date the Newry Portadown canal restoration (The Irish Times, January 16th, 1996).
I am prompted to ask what is happening in this country in the business (?) of celebrating the Millennium other than the clock in the river? (One is reminded of the fate that befell the An Tostal "thing" on O'Connell Bridge in 1951 in this respect.)
We will pass over the question of when exactly it should be celebrated which has had a good, if inconclusive airing, in your letters columns, even though it affects the above clock Yours, etc., Church Road, Killiney, Co Dublin.
