Sir, - Some Bible stories have more appeal than others; the story of little David pitting himself against the giant Goliath is one favourite.
A Goliath for the millennium has recently been observed strutting through the media in the form of colossal advertising for RTE's rock version of Messiah in the RDS, while little David (amateur choral groups on a tight budget, promoting the arts and performing Messiah for charity) simply wants to be heard!
Handel's Messiah, traditionally, is performed for charity. During the month of December, three choirs will perform Messiah in Dublin for three different charities: the Culwick Choral Society in St Patrick's Cathedral on December 1st and 2nd for the Arthritis Foundation of Ireland; the Dun Laoghaire Choral Society in Monkstown Parish Church on December 5th for the St Vincent de Paul Society; and Our Lady's Choral Society in the National Concert Hall on December 13th for The Children's Hour (with further performances on the 15th, 16th and 17th).
If Goliath roared a little less loudly and let the sound of Little David's voice go forth, there is every chance that they could all live happily ever after! - Yours, etc.,Magdalen O'Connell, Bayside Boulevard North, Dublin 13.
