Sir, - If only journalists were not so biased and would just let our hardworking and harassed Government Ministers get on with the job of ruining (sorry) running the country, then the Ministers could manipulate - oops, manage - things properly. It's time for people to be told the truth about those media people who are, of course, the real problem - the enemies of the State, the fourth estate, fifth columnists, and even worse. They're unethical and greedy and will write just about anything to sell more newspapers.
OK, that was a paranoid view from the top. An objective and reality-based view from the ground presents a rather different picture. Take for example, how the FF/PD coalition government survived the June 30th motion of confidence by a margin of 84 votes to 80. This was achieved by the votes of the four pseudo-Independents, a.k.a. the four "Government Independents", or "dependents", as the so-called Opposition derisively calls them. These are our modern camp followers, notoriously known down the years for their willingness to sell their services.
Fintan O'Toole's classic article, "The Alice in Wonderful logic that runs a country" (The Irish Times, July 1st), put the whole farce in proper perspective. Mr O'Toole is always a good read but that had to be about as good as it gets.
In all fairness it must be admitted that we have some of the best politicians that money can buy. - Yours, etc.,
