Sir, - The deafening silence of the international community towards the horrific massacres being perpetrated daily against hapless civilians in Algeria serves to underline, yet again, the sheer indifference of the world's governments to human tragedy.
The great powers of the Western world have done absolutely nothing to stem the flow of innocent death; they have watched from the sidelines as women and children have had their throats cut; watched while entire families are blown away in an orgy of hate.
But why should any rightminded person feel in anyway surprised? Little if anything was done by the international community to prevent the genocides in Cambodia, Uganda and Rwanda.
Until the United Nations declares its sincere and unequivocal interest in protecting the lives of the vulnerable on this planet, the horror of a situation such as Algeria will continue unabated. - Yours, etc.,
