Sir, – We wish to thank the unexpectedly large number of people who turned out for the Royal Irish Constabulary/Dublin Metropolitan Police commemoration in Glasnevin last Saturday.
The numbers far exceeded our expectations and this was due in no small part to the coverage given to the event by your paper in the previous days, in particular the excellent pieces by Conor Brady and Mary Minihan on the 24th and by Stephen Collins on the 25th.
After the ceremony we were humbled by the number of people who literally queued up to shake our hands and congratulate us. All had relatives in the RIC or DMP and they were thrilled at the opportunity of attending the first ceremony of its type. Some had tears in their eyes, while others had photographs of their loved ones to show us.
Since then we have both been inundated with letters, cards, emails and texts congratulating us on undertaking this venture. Sadly we did not have the opportunity of getting all their contact details on the day, and through your newspaper we are asking them and indeed anyone else who had relatives in the RIC or DMP to contact us at ricanddmp@gmail.com. – Yours, etc,
