Madam, – On preparing to leave Ireland, which has been my home for the past four months, I have one simple suggestion to counter the disgusting attitude of politicians towards the Irish people on display recently.

One basic way to make government accountable and have a healthy fear of the electorate is to make voting compulsory for all citizens.

Too many people have sacrificed their lives for this country, and it should be a basic responsibility of citizens to hold their government to account. – Yours, etc,
