Madam, - The recent unveiling of an ATM in a pub in Kerry has got to be a bad idea.

The shortage of cash was at least one reason for drinkers to slow down or drink less, especially in crowded pubs, where leaving its doors is no guarantee of getting back in.

This will serve as a significant test of our Minister for Health's resolve and sincerity in tackling what is already a serious national drink problem. The last thing drinkers - and especially the partners and children of serious drinkers - need, is the added temptation of readily available funds. A simple piece of legislation - such as that proposed to ban smoking in pubs - is essential, before disastrous social consequences force our hand. - Yours, etc.,
