MAJOR OBSTACLE

Sir, - John Major, in his recent interview on BBC TV, indicated that he is in the business of putting up obstacles to both European and Irish unity. One might expect a British Government at this stage to get more involved in Europe and to disengage in Ireland. The opposite is the case.

He mentioned in his interview that his decision on Europe would be based on national rather than party interest. He gave no such guarantee about his future decisions on Northern Ireland.
