Madam, - I thoroughly enjoyed Conor O'Clery's valedictory article (August 20th) which revived some fond memories. I remember on one occasion spending a weary day in rain-sodden Limerick and being wakened at 3am in some dingy hotel by the loud sound of disco music from the floor below.
Unable to sleep, I reached for The Irish Times to find a front-page piece from Conor high in the snow-swept Khyber Pass eating borsch with the Russian army. Comforted by the thought that there was some poor sucker worse off than myself, I went back to bed and slept soundly.
I wish him well in retirement and knowing his restless energy, look forward to reading further adventures in the years ahead. - Yours, etc,
EUGENE McELDOWNEY, Howth, Co Dublin.
