Madam, – I read with interest Maeve Jones-O’Connor’s piece on the EU (WeekendReview, July4th) I note however, that, like most on the pro-Lisbon side, she fails to highlight a single area of the treaty that would benefit the citizens of the EU.
I agree that EU membership has been enormously beneficial to Ireland yet, if I had a vote, I would vote No, not because I think Ireland should leave the Union but because I don’t believe that Lisbon sends us in the right direction.
I think that the EU should stick to the original version of an economic community, and not move towards a United States of Europe as Lisbon attempts to do.
We should be focusing on making the economy of Europe as robust as possible instead of rushing through a treaty which few actually understand, that essentially attempts to culturally homogenise most of the continent and will nullify our own constitution.
