Sir, - During last year's local elections I advocated the use of water buses on the River Liffey between Heuston Station and the city centre as part of a solution to the difficulties my constituents have in getting in to work each morning. I believe it would greatly enhance any rail link from the western suburbs of Dublin to Heuston Station.
I would be most interested in working with Capt Michael Reynolds (May 16th) to see if his eminently sensible idea of providing water buses could be got off the ground, so to speak. It would be much less costly than many of the present schemes being considered.
Government should not see this suggestion as a way of avoiding the upgrade of rail transport to Dublin city from suburbs like Clondalkin and Lucan. Both should be done at the same time. - Yours, etc.,
Cllr R. Dowds, (Lab), Member South Dublin Co Council, Clondalkin, Dublin 22.
