Madam, - The usual suspects have been arraigned for the tragic death of the little child whose cardiac surgery was deferred at Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin this week. Feckless politicians, greedy doctors, useless managers, missing nurses and unnecessary bureaucrats have all taken their turn in the dock of public opinion. Little attention has been paid to those who bear the real moral responsibility for this tragedy, and for many others.
We are all responsible. The Irish people are to blame. This was the result of our political choices. We have elected a series of right-wing governments committed to low taxes, especially for the wealthy, and to inevitably limited public services. We should not complain when our free political choices lead to predictable consequences. - Yours, etc.,
Dr ANTHONY STAINES, The Park, Skerries Rock, Skerries, Co Dublin.
