Madam, - Gabrielle Kelly (August 19th) suggest that a newspaper editor is someone who separates wheat from chaff and publishes the chaff. An editor might more aptly be described as someone who takes in other people's dirty laundry.

Ms Kelly recently travelled from the beautiful Vale of Avoca to Belfast to join the funeral procession of the convicted murderer Joe Cahill, who died safely in his bed. She has since nursed a "huge sense of betrayal" against southerners, against the columnists Kevin Myers and Newton Emerson, and against letter-writers Adrian Carroll, Brian Moran, Anthony Hartnett, all of whom were critical of Mr Cahill's life and send-off.

Ms Kelly's victimhood needs a lot more help than the Irish Times laundromat. - Yours, etc.,
