Sir, - At the outer edge of our local shopping centre a number of warning notices are displayed. The message is "Beware of Pedestrians". Not Presbyterians. Not Predestinarians. Pedestrians. Normal fully-developed modern citizens, hurtling about in four-wheeled glass and metal containers, have to be reminded of the unclean sub-species commonly found on our streets. These are readily identifiable by their obscene, crawling leg-movements.
Four-wheeled road-users are required by a humane government not to yield to a wholly understandable temptation to zap the unfortunate creatures wherever possible. The law also requires that hurtful encounters between pedestrians and motor vehicles should be investigated and recorded. Whenever such an encounter causes a leg walker to die instantly or to be subsequently put down, a member of the driver class may even sometimes be wholly deprived of his elite status. Is this fair? - Yours, etc.,
