Sir, - In 1994 four Co Louth residents took a legal case against the Thorp reprocessing plant at Sellafield. In April 1997 the Fianna Fβil manifesto stated:
"In Government Fianna Fβil will ensure that the case taken by the Dundalk residents is fully funded and, if required, appealed through the higher courts."
In May 1998 Fianna Fβil supported a Dβil motion proposed by Mr Ivan Yates:
"That Dβil ╔ireann calls on the Government to urgently support the legal case of the Louth residents group against BNFL through the provision of the necessary financial assistance towards research and legal costs. . ."
In Government Fianna Fβil failed to honour its promises. To date no Government funding has been granted towards research into the constitutional issues pertaining to this case. This is an urgent matter as the legal and constitutional aspects of this case will be dealt with in January 2002. Obviously there are implications for other legal challenges if these issues are not found in favour of the Louth four. - Your, etc.,
Tricia Murray, Stop Thorp Alliance Dundalk, Co Louth.
