Sir, – It is only when you walk through the bustling streets and lavish shops in the city-state of Singapore that you realise the full legacy of Lee Kuan Yew. I visited the island nation in 2009 and 2012 and the infamous ban on chewing gum was still in force. My cousins who used to live in Singapore would always stock up on chewing gum during their visits to Ireland.
In every bookshop you walked into in Singapore, there would be a special section dedicated to books about Mr Lee. He brought the country from poverty to prosperity but it will be interesting to see how the nation I grew to know so well will be able to move on. – Yours, etc,
