Madam, - I was amused when I read Paul Whelan's complaint about post-watershed swearing on RTÉ (February 5th). I would hardly have thought it surprising that a documentary, shown at 9.30pm and set largely in the kitchen of a restaurant, contained a few four-letter words. Just as drivers drive, writers write, singers sing and builders build - chefs swear.
I applaud RTÉ for treating its adult audience with respect, rather than following the patronising US practice of "protecting" viewers from mere harmless words by replacing them with irritating and intrusive high-pitched noises. - Yours, etc,
RAYMOND McGRATH, Grange Hall, Mountmellick, Co Laois.
