Madam, – I feel very strongly that the Waterford to Rosslare rail service should not close.
With the volcanic eruptions in Iceland, thousands of air passengers were stranded all across Europe, and bus and train transport helped them to make alternative arrangements.
With further volcanic activity predicted, I believe more people will start to use the ferry as a safer, greener and easier way to travel, and easy access from Rosslare to other parts of the country is essential.
Coming from the west of Ireland, I know the detrimental effect of the closure of the western rail corridor in the west. However, it is now enjoying a revival, with a strong passenger support. I believe the Waterford-Rosslare line should not close: the timetable should change to meet the working commuter and not just the ferry, and Irish Rail should work with the local community regarding this.
Who knows what the future will bring weather-wise? We should just remember the bad winter, with impassable roads, and think about what global warming can bring to us. We need to maintain our services now and for our future generations. – Yours, etc,
