Sir, - With regard to Peter Byrne's article on possible restrictions being placed on Roy Keane, to curb his "competitive instincts" on his probable return to the Republic of Ireland team for the World Cup qualifier with Iceland, no manager would ask a player to curb his commitment or competitiveness when representing his country.
However it seems reasonable to ask him not, to kick lumps out of the opposition, as referees quite rightly take a dim view of such behaviour. Very few players are sent off in any code for being "committed or competitive
