Sir, - Recent media coverage of John Hume's career generally ignored his significant contribution to the successful Irish credit union movement. That involvement was mentioned briefly by Mark Brennock (The Irish Times, September 18th).
In his foreword to my book Credit Unions in Ireland, (2nd edition, Oak Tree Press, 1999), Mr Hume emphasised his pride in his important work, begun as a young man, in founding the Derry Credit Union in 1960 and in publicising the advantages of co-operative credit throughout Ireland.
He explained his commitment to credit unions and their positive role as a community resource for individuals and families. His contribution should not be forgotten. - Yours, etc.,
Anthony P. Quinn, Law Library, Dublin 7.
