Madam, – I admit I am somewhat confused. A recent statement by Fianna Fáil stated that Ivor Callely had been suspended while an investigation into his actions was carried out to determine if his behaviour was “unbecoming of a member of Fianna Fáil”. Can anybody explain to me what exactly a member must be caught for for this charge to be upheld ? – Yours, etc,
Madam, – TD and former minister Mary O’Rourke said that Ivor Callely should be expelled from Fianna Fáil (Home News, August 3rd) and continued “I don’t know how you put a person out of the party, . . .”
As it was such a long time ago, Mrs O’Rourke must have forgotten that it was quite easy to put Des O’Malley out of the party when in 1985 he defied the FF whip by abstaining from voting on a Dáil motion opposed by his party.
He was then promptly expelled from the party for “conduct unbecoming of a member of Fianna Fail”. – Yours, etc,
