Sir, - I note that the new Islamic Cultural Centre at was opened some days ago by our president, Mary Robinson. Let us hope that this centre will become the beacon of understanding and tolerance, as spoken of by Mrs Robinson.
However, there are a few questions I would like to pose to the Imam and the Islamic community in Ireland:
Can we now expect the same level of tolerance for Christians and those of other religions living in Muslim countries, as the Muslims halve a right to expect in Ireland?
Will the Muslim community show greater tolerance towards those members of their faith who wish to change their religion?
Will the Imam and his community in Ireland do their utmost to secure the lifting of the Fatwa on Salman Rushdie?
When can we expect Muslim women to have the same rights as men in their everyday lives, and an end to the charade that the subjugation of women is "for their own protection" and "out of respect for them". - Yours, etc.,
