Sir, - Back in 1955 a similar match was arranged, and was opposed by certain elements in our society because of the repressive nature of the Yugoslav regime. The match went ahead anyway, supported by the same kind of people who have been vociferously opposing the latest proposed game.
As regards the moral character of regimes and their rulers, Marshal Tito had far more innocent blood on his hands than has President Milosevic. The main difference, it seems to me, is that while today Britain is at war with rump Yugoslavia, back in 1955 Yugoslavia was Britain's ally; and in fact Tito's regime had largely been the creation of the British Secret Service. - Yours, etc., Pol Croidheain,
Boithrin Fada, Cathrach na Gaillimhe.
