It is, I fear, impossible to lay to rest this oxymoronic canard. Ireland is not a neutral country, never has been.

There is no neutrality other than that sustained by immense military power, none whatever. The only neutral country in the world is Switzerland.

Ireland is a defenceless country, certainly - but isn't that an entirely different thing? That the weak and craven are incapable of violence does not, of itself, make them pacifists. - Yours, etc.,
