Sir, - As a recently returned emigrant, I was delighted to find an Ireland more prosperous and confident than the one I left a few years ago. However, I too have noticed a change of atmosphere such as David Rose described (The Irish Times, September 13th). Along with the increased wealth there is a new sense of "me first", combined with a materialism reminiscent of that which I left in the States.
As a nation we have made tremendous economic strides in the past few years but it will be a very hollow achievement if, in our hurry to make the next pound, we lose the warmth and charity which makes Ireland such a special country to live in. Yours, etc.,
Garret Pearse,
Dun Laoghaire,
