Sir, - Noel Dempsey has said that he is especially keen that local authorities take the lead role by using their full powers under the Litter Pollution Act. As Minister for the Environment surely it is his job to make the local authorities clean up the mess rather than urging them to do so. It is precisely this type of inaction that leaves our parks, canals, highways and byways choked with litter today.
On my drive to work I travel along Dodder Park Road in Dublin with the Dodder running parallel. Along the length of the river the litter would disgust anybody. Every tree and bush has plastic bags snagged on them, most notably near the local branch of Tesco.
How can such a local amenity be destroyed like this and why isn't the relevant authority dealing with it? Let's clean up our act. - Yours, etc.,
Graham Molloy, Stillorgan Road, Co Dublin.
