Sir, - Why have litter campaigns not been successful? Because they are only half-hearted, that is why. A few years ago, I travelled through the town of Sneem in Co Kerry, which had twice won the Tidy Towns award. Not as much as a used match was to be seen on the pathway.
I asked a shopkeeper how the town could be so spotless. He said it was all down to the parish priest. He preached, campaigned, cajoled, organised, would not tolerate, and the results were magical.
So where is the passion, muscle, enthusiasm in county councils, corporations, schools, homes? More emphasis on civics in schools, starting with pre-school, even at this late hour, should work wonders. Being helplessly ashamed will get us nowhere. - Yours, etc., Maureen Barry,
Duncormick, Co Wexford.
