Sir, - How pitiful of India's newspapers to praise the country's "bold and courageous" step in its recent nuclear test (The Irish Times, May 13th).

India has now sent a sharp signal to the world that it has the capability and the resources to become the world's sixth nuclear state. This is deeply worrying and contrary to the global trend and international consensus to stop the spread of nuclear proliferation.

It reinforces our wish to see the Irish Government seek a ban on the transport of radioactive materials by air and through the Irish Sea to stop THORP, the reprocessing plant at Sellafield, and to push for a sustainable, non-nuclear European Union energy policy to replace the EURATOM Treaty. India's decision to test its nuclear capability has once more highlighted our own national concerns vis-a-vis Sellafield. - Yours, etc., Mary White,
