Madam, – It is always a pleasure to read the words of David Norris, but the joy I derived from his words on the possible marriage of the GPO and the Abbey Theatre (Opinion, October 15th) struck a chord. What historical symmetry there would be if the Abbey took up residence in our most famous building on the main street of our capital city! The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as I relished the possibility of an institution with its first champions so fundamentally linked to the history and chronicling of our State, returning you could say, to the iconic scene of one of its most famous stands.
In 39 years service to the post office my father worked for a considerable amount of this time in the GPO. It was my good fortune to visit his office there many times over the years and soak up the historical and cultural significance of his workplace.
The GPO has a soul, and with the Abbey housed within new life would be breathed into its venerable host. The karmic influence resulting from this union would spread across the surrounding area in a regenerative wave. The architectural and cultural opportunities are too great to ignore. – Yours, etc,
