Sir, - The proposal to build houses on Bray Head is an outrage. The planning authorities should never have given permission for this scheme.
Under foreign rule Ireland became known as the "Emerald Isle" because, having escaped much of the industrial revolution, we were able to preserve so much of our greenery. Now we have our native rulers and officials in league with money-loving developers who seem to be determined to destroy the traditional image.
There is a veritable explosion of building in this country at present. Of course, we all know that more housing, both private and local authority, is required at all times, but many housing schemes are going up in woodland and other areas that should never be built on. There is no consideration for the environment. One of these days we may hear of plans to build houses in the Phoenix Park.
Bray Head and its twin promontory, Howth Head across the water, belong to all Ireland. They are part of our national heritage. To those who are prepared to violate their scenic integrity we can apply the words of W. B. Yeats, uttered on a famous (or infamous) occasion: "You have disgraced yourselves again." - Yours, etc., Ernan Morris,
Ballynoe Court, Bray, Co Wicklow.
