Sir, - The unity for which the Lord Jesus so earnestly prayed was distinctly a unity based on truth (John 17:17-19). That which courts the lie cannot deem itself to come under the title of Christian unity. This being the case, logical people are left wondering how the Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor could be invited - and, indeed, accept - an invitation to preach in Abbey Presbyterian Church in Dublin (The Irish Times, January 18th).
The Presbyterians swear to uphold the Westminster Confession of Faith, which among other things denounces the Mass. The auxiliary bishop swears to uphold the teaching of the Pope, of which the Mass is a central plank. Who is bluffing whom? Do ordination vows, sworn before God and the congregation, mean nothing nowadays? - Yours, etc.,
Colin Maxwell, (Cork Free Presbyterian Church), Shanakiel, Cork.
