Sir, – It is to be hoped that our Government will accept the invitation to attend the Somme and first World War commemorations in Belfast later this year (Home News, January 5th).

In doing so, the Government will be honouring the many thousands from the 26 counties who fought and died during the 1914-18 conflict, not least the 150 or so men from counties Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan who perished along with many of their fellow Irishmen from the other six Ulster counties on July 1st, 1916, the opening day of the battle of the Somme. – Yours, etc,

KEVIN CULLEN,

Blackglen Road,

Sandyford, Dublin 18.
