Madam, – Edward Thornley (April 12th) is incorrect in writing that Brigadier Lowe later emigrated to the US and became a Hollywood star. It was his son who changed his name to John Loder and became one of the quintessential English actors required in Tinseltown in the 1930s.
In fact, young John was on Easter vacation from his English public school stay with his dad when the Rising occurred. In his old age he wrote an excellent book Hollywood Hussar, about his experiences. I had the pleasure of interviewing him in Buck's Club in Mayfair (now gone) in the late 1970s when he treated me to a splendid lunch.
He had fond memories of Ireland and remembered Pearse well, saying he was a gentleman. He had been married to Hedy Lamarr who he described as exceedingly mean. On one Christmas she promised him a Rolls Royce in exchange for a diamond ring. He bought the ring and she gave him a toy replica of a Roller! His last wife had an Argentinian cattle ranch and there he spent much of his time until his death.
